IK4 is an Alliance of private, independent R&D Centres, which are committed to social and industrial development in their geographical area and which have decided to combine their capabilities. The IK4 Alliance was formed in 2005 in line with a federal model, whereby its members share strategies and combine capacities without giving up their sovereignty. Through a shared strategy, the sum of the capacities of the nine centres provides the alliance with the flexibility it needs to adapt to the characteristics of any company. In other words, this strategy qualifies it technologically to provide a global response to the needs of large companies, while simultaneously fostering its capacity to maintain a close and committed relationship with SMEs. IK4 is in an ideal position to establish long-term relations as a strategic ally of companies in the matter of innovation. This makes IK4 a benchmark in participation in research projects promoted by the public administrations. Today, IK4 is a benchmark on the European scene and is among the continent's main private, scientific and technological corporations. Attention should be drawn to IK4's leading role in the European Union's 7th Framework Programme, in which it has participated in over 200 research projects and led 63 of them. It collaborates with the remaining scientific and technological players by encouraging the efficient use of resources devoted to research, and by furthering the training and integration of people who are highly qualified in the economic and social environment it serves. In IK4 we currently have a portfolio of private clients numbering around 1,500 companies, both from the Basque Country and the rest of Spain. Among our clients are to be found small and medium-sized companies along with other larger companies, such as Abengoa, Acciona, CAF, Cegasa, CIE Automotive, Fagor, Gamesa, Grupo Danobat, Iberdrola, Ikusi, ITP, Repsol, Telefónica, Ulma, Unión Fenosa, Vodafone, etc. In addition, we continue to seek to reach the greatest possible convergence and coordination with the Basque Government, the Provincial Governments and the other agents of the Basque System of Science and Technology: Universities, Cooperative Research Centres (CICs), Entrepreneurial R+D Units, BERC, Innobasque and SPRI, as well as the Tecnalia Corporation.
