About University
Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), a research center jointly governed by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). IMEDEA’s main goal is the production of high-quality scientific and technical knowledge about the structure and function of Nature and its responses to human activities. This knowledge is essential to the sustainable management of natural systems and to improve people’s quality of life. Concerned with its geographical context, IMEDEA research is focused on coastal/insular marine ecosystems. Thirty years after its foundation in 1986, IMEDEA has become a center of reference for the international and national scientific community in its activity field and for environmental managers in the Balearic Islands, a science talent attractor and a contributor to the training of young researchers. The Institute is active in transferring research outputs to society and in promoting scientific vocations among the young and science culture among the general public.

Our institute belongs to the area of Natural Resources, and it develops scientific and technical research in the framework of the CSICs Strategic Line «Global Change.
The research activities at IMEDEA are structured into Research Groups, but our researchers are actively involved in the International Laboratory on Global Change (LINC Global) and in the Coastal Ocean Observing and Forecasting System of the Balearic Islands (SOCIB). In addition, the activity of our researchers during these years has led to founding Albatros Marine Technolgies, a spin-off company devoted to the development of instrumentation for marine research.
