The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research was founded in 2006. It is an autonomous science research and education institute in Nadia district, West Bengal, India, awarding its own degrees. The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research was established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2006 and promoted to the status of an Institute of National Importance in 2012 vide the NIT Amendment Act. The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research It is one of seven Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, and was the first of the IISERs to be established along with IISER Pune. The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research has five departments. They are biological sciences; chemical sciences; earth sciences; mathematics and statistics; and physical sciences. Centre of Excellence for Space Sciences (CESSI) is hosted by The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research. The Institute also have field station for ecological, environmental and field studies, and a broadband seismological observatory. The programmes offered by the institute are Integrated PhD Programme, Doctor of Philosophy Programme, Post-Doctoral Research Programme, 5 year BS-MS Dual Degree Programme, MS by Research Programme. The Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research is in 4th rank in terms of research, coming in right after the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, according to the Nature publishing Index. The institute consists of 91 members of academic staff. The institute organizes a major annual festival, Inquivesta,[6] which is promoted as one of the first and the biggest science fest of the country. It also hosts VIJYOSHI along with IISc Bangalore and the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, since 2014. The IISER stopped accepting students aolely based on Olympiads from 2009 and relied only on KVPY and IIT-JEE. The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata was functioning from the temporary campus at Mohanpur.
