The Indian Maritime University (IMU) is established by an Act of the Indian Parliament namely the Indian Maritime University Act 2008, on 14 November 2008 as a Central University for imparting quality education in the maritime field with its main campuses at Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Cochin. To facilitate and promote maritime studies, training, research and extension work with focus on emerging areas of studies like oceanography, maritime history, maritime laws, maritime security, search and rescue, transportation of dangerous cargo, environmental studies and other related fields, and also to achieve excellence in these and connected fields and other matters. IMU sell advanced understanding by way of supplying institutional and research facilities in such branches of mastering as it is able to deem suit and to make provisions for integrated guides in Science and other key and frontier areas of Technology and allied disciplines inside the educational programmes of the University. IMU also take suitable measures for selling improvements in teaching-mastering technique, inter- disciplinary research and studies; and to pay special attention to the merchandising of educational and monetary pursuits and welfare of the human beings of India. IMU guide and sell freedom, secularism, equality and social justice as enshrined in the Constitution of India and to act as catalyst in socio-economic transformation by promoting primary attitudes and values of essence to countrywide improvement therefore, to extend the advantages of understanding and talents for development of individuals and society by using associating the University closely with nearby, nearby and countrywide problems of improvement.
