The French Institute of Education is a component of the ENS de Lyon, but it has its own management bodies (director, governance consultant, strategic and scientific advisory board). It takes over from the National Institute for Educational Research, and assumes all its missions and obligations, with the exception of the museum mission. The IFÉ is a national structure for research, training and mediation of knowledge in education, based on ongoing interaction with educational communities, through the recruitment of seconded teachers and associate professors. The French Institute of Education will progressively cover the entire field of education, from kindergarten to university, from formal to continuing education. It concentrates on "education to" (health, city, new technologies, etc.), which are aimed at audiences of all ages and all social and cultural capital. At the same time, it is open to other actors like local authorities, associations and companies. Its mission is also to foster public debate on the major contemporary challenges of education, and to make scientific and technological resources available to the public. The issues addressed by the IFI within its thematic priorities call for the development of partnerships beyond the national education and higher education and research system. The mission of supporting the national and academic steering of school education entrusted to the Institute leads it to maintain close links with the Directorate General of School Education (DGESCO) of the Ministry of National Education. In this context, the Institute can mobilize on priority issues and issues of national education carry out research activities involving teachers develop an activity of expertise and scientific and documentary information for the ministry. At the academic level, the IFÉ develops partnerships with most of the rectorates, to carry out research, expertise and support for continuing education and training on a wide range of fields, including ICT, Experimentation and innovation, priority education, Pedagogical evolutions, etc. The development of a "knowledge" society places education and training as major issues in the contemporary world. It is in this context that we must think about research in education. Inherited from an experience of five decades, the research at the IFÉ develops in interaction with the other departments of the Institute and with the research centre of ENS de Lyon. It is based on seven strong characteristics: ï§ It is a fundamental research , whose objective is to understand the educational processes; ï§ It is a research involved , which wants to provide tools of reference to the actors of the education; ï§ It is a participatory research that associates practitioners at all stages of its development; ï§ It is an interdisciplinary research , combining inputs from a set of scientific fields; ï§ It is a research which has a broad aim , considering education and training in all their dimensions; ï§ It is a research which is interested in the long time, which is that of the learning and the development of the educational devices;
