The Institute of Life Sciences is an autonomous research institute which is brought under the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India in August 2002. Earlier the institute was under the administrative and financial control of Department of Science and Technology, Government of Orissa. Later the institute was declared as National Centre for Excellence on July 15, 2003. The Institute of Life Sciences is located at Bhubaneswar, India. The mandate of the Institute of Life Sciences is to undertake basic and translational research in frontier areas of life sciences. The three major areas of research fields at the institute includes: (a) Infectious Disease Biology, (b) Gene Function and Regulation and (c) Translation Research and Technology Development. In addition to conducting these research themes, the institute has established new collaborations with the related industry to tap the commercial potential of laboratory sciences.
