The Ophthalmological Research Institute (IRO) is a public foundation originated in 1989 and grounded in Sion. Its mission is to donate to a better information of ocular diseases for earlier diagnosis and more effective therapy. To do this, the IRO look a lot like a group of physicists, engineers, biologists and physicians who train the genetics of ophthalmic diseases and progress advanced techniques and instruments used for simple research of visual function and for clinical studies . This is how the IRO ranges a Swiss tradition of excellence in the area of ophthalmology. The Foundation categorizes and coordinates the several activities allowing the formation, the start-up, the growth and the expansion of companies in Valais. It generates the right framework conditions to encourage the economic actors of Valais to display creativeness and innovation. The Ark exemplifies the plan developed by the cantonal authorities to make a real technological park in Valais.
