When Urbain-Jean-Joseph Le Verrier verified that a storm that overwhelmed a French fleet in the Black Sea came from the West, and thus could have been forecast. The first French meteorological service was then shaped within the Paris Observatory. After Le Verriers death, this service was transformed into a Central Bureau of Meteorology, under the management of the Ministry of National Education whose direction was commended to Eleuthère Mascart, professor at the Collège de France. At about the same time, local scientists set up mountain observatories. The first among them being the one at the Puy de Dôme, founded by Emile Alluard, a French physicist who invented a renowned hygrometer. Below mentioned are the research departments in Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris • AQUATIC GEOCHEMISTRY • COSMOCHEMISTRY, ASTROPHYSICS AND GEOPHYSICAL EXPERIMENTATION • EARLY AND PRESENT GEOBIOSPHERE • EXTERNAL ENVELOPES GEOCHEMISTRY • GEOLOGICAL FLUIDS DYNAMICS • GEOMAGNETISM • GEOMATERIALS • GEOMICROBIOLOGY • GRAVIMETRY AND GEODESY • LITHOSPHERE TECTONICS AND MECHANICS • MARINE GEOSCIENCES • PALEOMAGNETISM • PHYSICS OF NATURAL SITES • PLANETOLOGY AND SPACE SCIENCES • STABLE ISOTOPES GEOCHEMISTRY • SEISMOLOGY • VOLCANIC SYSTEMS BOARD OF DIRECTORS • Marc CHAUSSIDON is the Director • Marc BENEDETTI is the Deputy director in charge of Industrial Relations • Gauthier HULOT is the Deputy director in charge of research • Anne LE FRIANT is the Deputy director of the observatories • François MÉTIVIER is the Deputy director of studies division Research Programme A program at the Paris Institute of Earth Physics is a research project based on the skills and scientific expertise developed within several research teams. It corresponds to a precise scientific objective, using several disciplines or methodological approaches, and which can not generally be carried out by a single team. It assists from honoured material and human resources over a limited period. It can be based on a partnership with industry (CO 2 program ) or it can be financed completely from public funds. Several multidisciplinary programs have been started freshly by different teams of the IPGP.
