Instituto Español de Oceanografía

The Oceanographic Institute of Santander (https://www.ieo.es/), belonging to the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, is one of the foundation aggregates of Cantabria International Campus (CCI). It is a part of the CCI Strategic Area of Knowledge of “Water and Energy” and shares specific collaboration actions in the “Sea of Innovation Cantabria Cluster”, an aggregation of public and private organizations which constitute an international reference in the research of renewable energies in the marine environment. Cantabria International Campus and the Oceanographic Institute of Santander are trying to take advantage of the collaboration of the Oceanographic Institute and the UC through the group of Environmental Engineering and the Environmental Hydraulics Institute (IH Cantabria), together with the aggregates, thus fostering an exchange of researchers, sharing their equipment, facilities and infrastructure and collaborating in the spreading of knowledge. As a result, CCI is promoting the basis to present a joint offer of research capacities, equipment and infrastructures which is available for researchers and companies in this context. In 2011, the Oceanographic Institute and the UC, together with other aggregates of Cantabria International Campus, have held two international activities in Santander. The UC offers a broad range of postgraduate studies aimed at responding to the current needs of society. Their objective is, on the one hand, to train professionals capable of accepting and overcoming the contemporary socio-economic challenges and, on the other hand, of creating an entire generation of top-rate researchers. The UC postgradute courses consist on masters, doctorates and continuing education. GRADUATE COURSES The official masters have been adapted to the New European Higher Education Area. Courses offered by the UC provide advanced training that facilitates academic or professional specialisation, or else which foster initiating a research career. These studies carry between 60 and 120 ECTS credits and may be applied for by anyone holding an official university degree. The University of Cantabria offers other postgraduate studies which provide further preparation in many different areas of specialisation and which are directly focused on the professional applications of the disciplines being taught. DOCTORATE COURSES Doctoral studies are aimed at training academics and researchers of the very highest level. They combine specialisation within a scientific and technical area with training in research techniques. Instituto Español de Oceanografía is at 411 in terms of size and 545 in world ranking whereas in Spain itself it is on the 16th rank. It got around 800-900 total project funding. In 2016 it got 9.100.317 funding. In coordination with the Vice-Rector Office for Research and Knowledge Transfer, rapprochement and entrepreneurial collaboration programmes and actions have been developed, which in one sense have meant a greater knowledge of the University and its research groups by regional and national companies, and in the other sense, of the entrepreneurial fabric and its characteristics by university researchers. At the same time, structures and regulations of the UC itself have been consolidated in order to pay attention to the whole process of creation and knowledge transfer. Therefore, with the support of the “Board in Research and Organization Areas”, actions in various services to support management in research and transfer are coordinated; the Service of Research Management, the Research Results Transfer Office (OTRI) and the units which have been recently created with the aim of promoting a valorization in research and internationalization results: the Valorization Office and the Office of European Projects. Another key part of the University of Cantabria in the promotion of entrepreneurial collaboration, entrepreneurship and the development of technologically-based companies is the Leonardo Torres Quevedo Foundation (FLTQ) which is the General Foundation of our University. Besides carrying out management in entrepreneurial collaboration projects, FLTQ manages the Centre for Technological Development in the UC (CDTUC), one of the first university-based technological parks which is also a “breeding ground for companies” and a meeting and work point amongst research groups and “technologically-based companies” (EBT’S). Once the companies placed in CDTUC have been consolidated, they will carry out their natural development in the Scientific and Technological Park in Cantabria (PCTCAN), where the University forms part of its Board. The internationalization mark of CDTUC is placed with its participation in the UNIEMPRENDIA Network, which brings together the most important Ibero-American Universities who have developed Scientific-Technological Parks.
