Instituto Pirenaico de Ecología

About the University: The Pyrenean Institute of Ecology (IPE) is a research center integrated into the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC),within the Department of Natural Resources. Our main mission is to contribute to the understanding of the functioning and structure of terrestrial systems and the organisms that live there. We also investigate the changes that occur in these systems as a consequence of Global Change, including climatic variability and human activities. Although we work primarily in mountain areas, the IPE researchers efforts span other geographic contexts in Europe, Africa and the Americas. The IPE is the center of the oldest CSIC in Aragon and the only dedicated exclusively to research in ecology. It was founded in Jaca in 1942, as Station of Pyrenean Studies, and since then has had a multidisciplinary orientation. Since 1945 he has published one of the oldest journals of the CSIC: "Pirineos", dedicated to the study of mountains in general. Academies:
The Institute is organized through its two traditional Departments:
Department of Geo-environmental Processes and Global Change: It is included in the line of research of Earth Sciences of the Area of Natural Resources of the CSIC. Its main objective is the study of changes in geomorphological, hydrological and ecological systems as a consequence of changes induced by climate fluctuations and human activities, at different temporal and spatial scales and has two research groups with differentiated lines, But interrelated.
Environmental hydrology and interactions with climate and human activities -Coordinator of the group: Sergio M. Vicente Serrano Department of Conservation of Biodiversity and Restoration of Ecosystems: Included within the thematic area "Ecology and Conservation of Biodiversity" of the Natural Resources area of the CSIC. The general objective is to describe and interpret the processes responsible for the organization of current biodiversity and the functioning of ecosystems, and to apply such knowledge to curb the deterioration of natural systems and to promote their ecosystem functions, and is structured in two other research groups. Conservation of Natural Ecosystems. - Coordinator of the group Concepción L. Alados Restoration Ecological. - Coordinator of the group: Francisco A. Comín Sebastián. Statistics: In the year 2015, IPEs activity has been maintained at a high level of funding, project leadership, national and Publication.
