Instituto de Agrobiotecnología

The Instituto de Agrobiotecnología is a research centre run jointly by the Public University of Navarre (UPNA), the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Government of Navarre. Opened in 1999, the centre focuses on the study of different aspects of biotechnology and agronomy. The research staff working in the IdAB consists of UPNA professors, CSIC researchers, pre- and post-PhD researchers under contract, and technical and administrative staff from the two institutions. Chief Mission of University are: 1. To lead the research work carried out in the Community of Navarre on subjects related to Biotechnology in order to consolidate knowledge-based economic and social development. 2. To transform the scientific knowledge acquired into tools which can be applied to agriculture, health and the environment. 3. To stimulate the development of business activity centring on research into biological issues and contribute to the creation of technology-based companies. 4. To provide the academic and business communities with scientific and technical advice regarding new technologies in the field of biotechnology. 5. To train researchers through pre- and post-PhD contracts. 6. To preserve Effective Gender Equality. Departments and Campus The UPNA and the CSIC initially agreed that the IARN should be organised into two departments: 1. Agricultural Biotechnology 2. Animal Health Since its creation, the institute has actively participated in the UPNA’s PhD programmes, the development of several of Navarre’s Technological Development Plans and the organisation of scientific conferences. Internationally renowned researchers have passed through the institute. The Governing Committee of the IdAB consists of two members from each of the institutions responsible for the centre appointed by the President of the CSIC, the Rector of the UPNA and the Government of Navarre’s Vice-President of Economic Development. Researches are on two main sections: a) Microbial Biotechnology b) Plant Biotechnology Statistics In view of the objectives proposed, the laboratories in the building were not large enough and so the Government of Navarre’s 2000-2004 Technological Plan provided funding with which to increase the facility’s infrastructure. The extension work was completed in April 2003 and both the CSIC and the UPNA provided additional funds to construct and equip the building’s laboratories and offices.
