Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias

The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) is an international research centre in Spain which comprises: • The Instituto de Astrofísica, the headquarters, which is in La Laguna (Tenerife). • The Centro de Astrofísica en La Palma (CALP) • The Observatorio del Teide (OT), in Izaña (Tenerife). • The Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos (ORM), in Garafía (La Palma). The IAC is constituted authoritatively as a Public Consortium, made by statute in 1982, with association from the Spanish Government, the Government of the Canary Islands, the University of La Laguna and Spains Science Research Council (CSIC). The International Scientific Committee (CCI) oversees support in the observatories by establishments from different nations. A Time Allocation Committee (CAT) apportions the watching time saved for Spain at the telescopes in the IACs observatories. The remarkable nature of the sky over the Canaries for cosmic perceptions is secured by law. The IACs Sky Quality Protection Office (OTPC) manages the use of the law and its Sky Quality Group consistently screens the parameters that characterize watching quality at the IAC Observatories. The IACs exploration program incorporates astrophysical research and mechanical advancement ventures. The IAC is likewise required in scientist preparing, college instructing and exceed exercises. The IAC has given much vitality to developming innovation for the outline and development of a vast 10.4 meter width telescope, the (Gran Telescopio CANARIAS, GTC), which is sited at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos. The IACs Office for the Publication of Research Results (OTRI), made under the arrangements of the National Research and Development (Plan Nacional de I+D), was a pioneer of the National Network of OTRI workplaces. The observatories of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias - the Observatorio del Teide, in Tenerife, and the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, in La Palma - are situated at two of the most great locales for galactic perception. The contemporary history of cosmology in the Canaries started with space science endeavors in the nineteenth century. A gathering of compositions about these crusades, by Prof. F. Sánchez, can be found in Vistas in Astronomy (1985). International Collaboration with IAC Members of the CCI • Belgium • Denmark • France • Germany • Italy • Norway • Spain • Sweden • United Kingdom Other Participating Countries • Armenia • Finland • Ireland • Netherlands • Poland • Portugal • Russia • Taiwan • Ukraine • United States Research Projects: 1. Astrophysics Research Projects Pure research activities at the IAC are organized into six subject areas covering most fields within Astrophysics whether theoretical, observational or instrumental. Individual projects are directed and managed by a "Principal Investigator" (PI). IAC researchers and post-doctoral students work either full-time or part-time on projects, with researchers from other centers encouraged collaborating. 2. Technological Development Projects The IAC conducts projects on earth and space telescopes, high resolution, infrared instrumentation, optics and microwaves, as well as technological support.
