Instituto de Biología y Genética Molecular

The Institute of Biology and Molecular Genetics (IBGM) is a joint center of the University of Valladolid and the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). The IBGM is a multidisciplinary center where projects are developed to understand the mechanisms used by the cells to carry out their basic functions in different systems and tissues, from the strictly molecular scope to the more complex levels of integration that determine the functioning of All our cells both in physiological conditions and in pathological situations.
The IBGM, together with the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Physiology, annually organizes a series of Research Seminars. This activity aims to contribute to the continued scientific enrichment of all IBGM research staff, inviting researchers from other Universities and Research Centers, Inside and outside Spain, to give lectures every Friday in our auditorium.

Three of the founding groups of the Institute, initially led by Prof. B. Herreros, are currently part of the Unit. Professor Benito Herreros, teacher of most of the members of the unit died in 2002, but the main lines of research are maintained and have been enriched with new additions. The interest of the unit is focused on Ca2+ -mediated Signaling, Signal Transduction Mechanisms, Molecular Bases of O2 Sensitivity, Ionic Channels or the role of the mitochondria in the Chemotherapy and Neuroprotection processes.
