The Institute of Agricultural Sciences (ICA) was established in 2004 to provide the CSIC with a center of excellence in agri-environmental research, capable of addressing the challenges of modern and specialized Spanish agriculture.
Its lines of research seek to respond to the increasing social demand for safe and quality agricultural products, proper management of urban and agricultural waste and sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural systems.
The scientific structure of the ICA is based on three main lines of complementary research: environmental pollution, plant health and beneficial interactions between plants and microorganisms. The use of multidisciplinary approaches allows contributing relevant information on key aspects of the environmental risks associated with agricultural production.
Its proximity to numerous other centres of the CSIC, INIA and several universities in Madrid allow it to work closely with all these institutions. Likewise, its location in Madrid, a major consumer of agricultural products and producer of urban and industrial waste, places the ICA in a good position to collaborate with these sectors.
Institute of Agricultural Sciences has been immensely supporting two major departments in the field of scientific research, Department of Soil, Plant and Environmental Quality and Department of Plant Protection. The Department of Soil, Plant and Environmental Quality has been in continuous support for research on; Waste Treatment and Reuse in Agriculture, Bio indicators of Soil Pollution, Environmental Impact of Nitrogen Use, and Plant-Microorganism Beneficial Interactions. The Department of Plant Protection has been working on Weed Ecology, Insects Plant Pathogens Vectors, Bio pesticides: Biotechnology and Natural Product Chemistry, Plant Resistance to Pests and Diseases and Plant-Parasitic Interactions, Plant-Insect Interactions in Agro ecology, Insect-Pathogen-Plant Interactions Unit and Its Bio control Agents (IPAB), Control Unit of Insects Vectors Under Sustainable Agriculture Systems (IVAS).
The library of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences is a specialized support service for its users in the scientific areas of the institute. In addition to preserving the collection of books and magazines on paper of the Center, the historical-technical archive of Professor Albareda, founder of the institute in 1942, is preserved. In turn, we contributed to the dissemination of the works of the Centers researchers through the archives Delegate to the Digital-CSIC website.
The Various Projects and Activities include:
City Science: It is a scientific outreach project of the CSIC and the "La Caixa" Obra Social, whose aim is that the inhabitants of localities far from the big cities know firsthand the current scientific and technological.
Science Week: The Institute of Agricultural Sciences (ICA-CSIC) participates actively in Science Week, an annual milestone celebrated in November throughout Spain.
Formation in work centers: The Institute participates in the "Professional Training Module in Work Centers" of the Ministry of Education of the Community of Madrid and the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of the Community of Castilla-La Mancha.
4º ESO + Company: Educational stays of students of 4º ESO are realized in the ICA.
