Instituto de Productos Naturales y Agrobiologia

The Instituto de Productos Naturales y Agrobiología (IPNA) is one of a system of research focuses having a place with the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), which is a State Agency inside the Spanish Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (MINECO). The destinations of the Institute are differed. It is a multidisciplinary focus whose exercises are gathered in the accompanying Research Areas: Substance Sciences and Technologies Agrarian Sciences Common Resources Investigate at the Institute is completed inside the structure of research undertakings financed by EU programs, the CICYT (MEC) and the Canary Islands Government, and in addition the private area. Look into under contract to firms or ventures represents over half of the aggregate money related support of the exploration extends as of now under way. Proficient support and administrations are likewise accessible for the horticultural area of the islands. In like manner, a system has been conveyed all through the archipelago for seismic observing and reconnaissance. These exercises, notwithstanding bringing about licenses and in articles distributed in prestigious logical diaries, are coordinated to the preparation of youthful research researchers. A current assessment of this Institute, and the majority of the CSIC focuses, performed by specialists of the European Science Foundation has demonstrated its incredible quality with a famous global initiative position Research Activities Agrobiology and the environment Photochemistry and Chemical Ecology Biologic Chemistry and Biotechnology. Strategies: In 2005 took place the evaluation of the CSIC research institutes carried out by renowned scientists of the European Science Foundation (ESF), during a long process which spanned almost the whole year culminating in the evaluation of the centres and the issue of a number of remarks which were compiled in the Strategic Plans elaborated for the 2005-2009 period. At last, the CSIC has allocated a number of human resources and scientific equipment for the institutes to contribute to achieve the milestones remarked in those Strategic Plans.Regarding the IPNA, the evaluation carried out by the ESF scientists is shown in the links below and, as a result of it, the resources allocated by the CSIC. Press reports capturing these circumstances are also shown. The present status of the Institute has been described in the Strategic Plan covering general structural data, human resources, scientific and technical infrastructure, and budget during the last fiveyear period (20002004). The activity report includes financial resources, scientific and technical production, interactions with the productive and social environment and internationalization, and training of researchers and postdoctoral activity. During the period, total scientific staff personal has been 2628, the number of papers in ISIindexed journals has been increasing form 12 to 28 per year, and several papers appears in the best international journals. This Institute meets with high quality standards. For the 2005-2009 Strategic Plan, analysis of the position of the Institute in its competitive environment focusing on strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats expected to be the foremost questions facing research activities has been provided. Similarly, mission and vision, research strategy, conditions and external tendencies, proposed evaluation criteria, and finally the actions to achieve the proposed objectives have been described in details for the Institute and for the different research groups. During the 5year period under consideration, total scientific staff personal is estimated to vary between 24 and 30, and the number of articles in ISI indexed journals between 25 and 30/year. This will require a higher budget. Research and Development needs and strategies: The IPNA is aware of the importance of multidisciplinary researchand does its best to fulfill this need with the means available. The IPNA has a long tradition in natural product chemistry and is recognized worldwide for its important contributions. Its ability to combine the discovery of bioactive compounds with structural analysis, chemical and biochemical transformations to valorize natural matter makes the IPNA a leader in the world. To maintain this position the IPNA will have to pursue the combat further.
