The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) is a professional organization dedicated to improving the care of patients with advanced heart or lung disease through transplantation, mechanical support and innovative therapies via research, education and advocacy. ISHLT was created in 1981 at a small gathering of about 15 cardiologists and cardiac surgeons. Today ISHLT have over 3000 members from over 45 countries, representing over 15 different professional disciplines involved in the management and treatment of end-stage heart and lung disease. ISHLT members include anesthesiologists, basic scientists, cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, ethicists, immunologists, nurses, pathologists, perfusionists, pharmacists, pulmonologists, tissue engineers, transplant coordinators, and infectious disease specialists. International Society for Heart & Lung Transplantation established some Scientific Councils Society like Basic Science and Translational Research (BSTR), New! Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH), Heart Failure and Transplantation (HFTX), Infectious Diseases (ID), Junior Faculty and Trainees (JFTC), Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS), Nursing, Health Science, and Allied Health (NHSAH), Pathology (PATH), Pediatric Thoracic Transplantation and Heart Failure (PEDS), Pharmacy and Pharmacology (PHARM), Pulmonary Hypertension (PH), Pulmonary Transplantation (PULM TX). ISHLT provides postgraduate training and education programmes related to advanced heart and lung failure and mechanical circulatory support. ISHLT pursues its educational mission via the provision of the following educational activities and resources: The Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions, Conference Recordings, Core Competency Curriculum Documents, Joint Educational Activities, including Endorsements, In-Kind Education Grants, and Joint Symposia, The ISHLT Academy, including Core Competency Courses and Master Classes, Webinars. ISHLT provides Grants and Awards Program is to support research training in heart and lung transplantation as well as end-stage heart and lung disease so as to encourage the development of clinical or basic science research in transplantation to many companies, including CSL Behring, Novartis, Roche, Astellas, XDx, Encysive, Gilead, Thoratec and CoTherix, and through the hard work of the ISHLT Grants and Awards Committee. The International Heart and Lung Transplant Registry has been collecting data since 1983 and tracks morbidity and mortality data post-transplant. At present, over 223 centers from 18 countries submit data to this registry. Participation in this registry is open to any center in the world performing heart and/or lung transplantation. ISHLT maintaines some databases like Data Request Forms Transplant Registry and MCSD Database, Registry Data Fields for those institutions and individuals who are interested in submitting data to the ISHLT Registry, and for those researchers who wish to conduct analyses of the Registry data or query the data base. The ISHLT International Mechanical Assisted Circulatory Support Database (IMACS) has been collecting data since 2013 and has as its mission the promotion of scientific investigations and publications based on analyses of this multinational database, providing the opportunity for an international array of authors to collaborate in Registry investigations, presentations, and publications. At present, contains data from over 17 centers and 4 collectives from 31 countries. ISHLT publishes its research through Newsletters, journals.
