Istanbul Technical University Polar Research Center (ITU PolReC) which is the first polar research centre of Turkey was established in 2015 with a mission to research on future of Antarctic region and Vision to conduct intercollegiate and international studies on Arctic, Antarctic, Ocean and Marine Sciences and raise public awareness about these topics and also contribute Turkey’s surplus value with referred about arctic studies in international area. 1 year after establishment ITU PolReC had first expedition to Antarctica. ITU PolReC has MoU's with some of most known institute doing polar. The main fields of activity of the university are participation of Turkey in International consortium of Antarctic continent, to establish a scientific station and republic of Turkish scientific research vessel study, to increase scientific studies which focus on global warming in Arctic and Antarctic region, International publications and participation in International scientific platforms, to engage in training activities.
Istanbul Technical University Polar Research Centre has its research centre in Tuzla / Istanbul, Turkey. It carries out research on Arctic and Antarctic continents with its scientists. There are 7 board of directors and 17 Scientific board members carrying out researches.
The projects that are on-going in the university are horizon 2020 space borne observations for detecting and forecasting sea ice cover extremes spices. They have many publications on their research on Antarctica.
