Department of Mathematics The Department was established in the year 1995 for teaching allied mathematics and it become a full fledged department in the year 2009. Department of Physics The Department of Physics was established in the academic year 2002-03 with UG and PG courses, which has now developed with modern facilities and state of art equipments to cater the needs of curriculum as well as advanced research providing an enthusiastic atmosphere for the students to work around. Department of Chemistry The Department of Chemistry started functioning from the year 2004. It is specialized in three main areas of research namely Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Phytochemistry, Medicinal Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry. During the last 10 years the Department has achieved remarkable progress in terms of research output. Department of Microbiology During the twenty first century, interest in microbiology increased quite significantly due to the wide application of microorganisms in studying different biological process. The main stimulus for wide scope of microbiology undoubtedly is due to their involvement in biotechnology and molecular biology. Keeping in that mind, the department of Microbiology was established in the academic year 2002-2003 with M.Sc. Microbiology. The aim of our Department is to promote quality and values based education by motivating the practical skills of students and create awareness on the recent advances in Microbiology and research fields worldwide Department of Biotechnology Biotechnology is an important tool that can be applied to various economic sectors of special interest to developing countries, such as the production of food crops, livestock management, human health care, chemical industry and environment management. The majority of developing countries including India lack the necessary qualified manpower to exploit such technologies. Further, Biotechnology, as practiced today, requires inputs from not only one area of biological sciences, but requires a fusion of different modern biological and technological sciences. Biotechnology has become a multi-billion dollar industry all over the world. Department of Biotechnology was established in 2001. The progress of the department is consistent over the years and presently holds many research projects funded by the UGC, DST, DBT and ICMR. During the last 10 years, the department has made all round progress and is on par with the well established departments of the University. Scholars in the department are pursuing research in the areas of Nano-biotechnology, Food Technology, Fermentation Technology, Plant Tissue Culture, Animal Tissue Culture, Genetics and Molecular Biology, Microbial Technology and Phytochemistry. It is commendable to mention that the department is the proud recipient of Rs. 2.1 crores from the Govt. of India for various research and development programmes. Department of Biochemistry Department of Biochemistry was established as a UG Department in 1995. The main objective of the course is to provide deep insight in biochemistry and equip students with basic biological knowledge, and also an in-depth exposure to the different research works, which will help students to get placed in, varied disciplines of life sciences. PG course in biochemistry was started in the year 1999 subsequently followed by M.Phil and PhD courses. The Department has well equipped UG, PG and Research labs with sophiscated instruments such as Inverted Microscope, Flourescent Microscope, Fluorimeter, UV Spectrophotometer, Microplate reader etc., In addition we have well established Animal House approved by IAEC and Animal Tissue Culture lab. Department of Bioinformatics The department was started in the year 2002 to meet the demands of bioinformatics companies, research institutes and provide necessary qualified and skilled manpower based on current trends and skill sets required. The Department has well qualified staff with industrial and research experiences. The special supports procured by the department is computing facility, financial support for research , visiting faculties/ guest faculties, subject related special training/ industrial visits, Faculty Development Programmes, for organizing National level Seminars/Conferences and for arranging Industrial visits for the benefits of the students. An International Workshop on Bioinformatics funded by AICTE and CSIR was organized. Department of Electronics and Communication Systems The Department of Electronics and Communication Systems was established in the academic year 2002 PG course, which has now developed with modern facilities and state of art equipments to cater the needs of curriculum as well as advanced research providing an enthusiastic atmosphere for the students to work around. Computer Science in the year 1995 and has progressed to offer Post Graduate Course and Research Programmes. The UG degree in Information Technology was introduced in the year 2007 and Computer Technology in the year 2014. The department provides a current and comprehensive learning environment for the students. The department fosters personal and professional growth for both students and faculty. Department of Information Technology The Department of Information Technology was established in the year 2007. As part of the School of Computer Science, the Information Technology Department offers Under Graduate B.Sc Information Technology programme. To ensure that our students receive the highest quality education possible, our curriculum incorporates various courses from Information Technology, Computer Science, and Software Engineering focusing on meeting the needs of IT users within an organizational and societal context through the selection, creation, application, integration and administration of computing technologies. Department of Computer Applications The Department of Computer Applications is one of the vibrant departments of the Karpagam Academy of Higher Education that offers courses such as BCA and MCA. Department comprises a team of 16 faculty members, six of whom are doctorates. It is committed to impart quality education by providing strong fundamental knowledge complemented by extensive practical training. With academic autonomy, the department regularly updates its curriculum and syllabi enabling the students to apply latest techniques, methods and tools to solve problems in all domains. To keep in touch with the ever growing technology, the faculty members participate regularly in refresher courses and symposia conducted by various universities. The BCA and MCA programmes not only groom students for a successful career in the IT industry but also encourages participation of students in the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities to bring out the hidden talents in them. Department of Commerce Department of Commerce was instituted in 1996. The Department assists students in acquiring managerial, technical and leadership skills. Apart from the regular teaching, learning and research, the department of Commerce actively concentrates on conducting regular Guest Lectures, Seminars, Group Discussions and Conferences at National and International levels in the emerging fields of Commerce. A team of highly qualified, experienced and committed faculty members work to ensure students to Enable, Enlighten and Enrich in their career. Department of Management Department of Management was the first Post –Graduate course started by the institution in the year 1996. It offers two year full time MBA programme leading to a Master’s degree in Management, M.Phil and Ph.D programmes leading to a Research Degree. The Department has an exclusive facility which is endowed with excellent infrastructure and a dedicated team of faculty members to train the students to meet the growing needs of the society. The Department follows a multidisciplinary approach to provide the necessary knowledge, skill and training to the students. The activities of the department are directed towards the all round development of the individual keeping in mind the expectations of the recruiters and the challenges of the environment. RESEARCH The Ministry of Science & Technology – Department of Science & Technology – Government of India has sanctioned a Joint Venture Project for Rs. 1.28 crore under the DPRB programme for Karpagam University towards Herbal Anti-Diabetic Formulation Development, NABL accredition level of labs are being established for this project. Facilities include HPTCL & Spray Dryer etc.
