Kenya Agriculture Research Institute was founded as a semi-autonomous government institution in the year 1979 under Science and Technology Act Cap 250. Initially it started research in agriculture and forestry departments under the guidance of East African Agricultural and Forestry Research Organisation (EAAFRO), East African Veterinary Research Organisation (EAAVRO) and later the Ministries of Agriculture and Livestock Development. The Kenya government recognizing the need for the increase in food production, it placed all the research centres (EAAFRO, EAAVRO & Ministries of Agriculture and Livestock Development) under Kenya Agriculture Research Institute. It has several departments dealing with the research in the field of Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Natural Resource Management and some of the fields related to Socioeconomics.
