Integrating Safety Designs for Increasing Energy Demands Underlying Theme for 7th Annual Battery Safety Conference
Leading battery researchers from around the world to convene in Bethesda, MD to discuss advances in chemistry, materials and modeling of lithium-ion batteries
The Knowledge Foundation presents its 7th Annual Battery Safety conference, taking place from November 3-4, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency Bethesda in Bethesda, MD. The event offers two full days of presentations, discussion groups, workshops and networking opportunities with industry leaders and battery researchers. The Battery Safety conference will cover topics such as engineering safety for diverse applications, failure analysis, designing safety with battery management systems, thermal considerations, and models, sensors & safety.
On November 3, Dr. Eric Wachsman, Professor and Director, University of Maryland Energy Research Center, will deliver a keynote presentation on solid-state lithium-ion batteries as the ultimate solution to battery safety. Dr. Wachsman’s presentation will examine the SSLiBs his team developed by incorporating high-conductivity garnet-type solid Li-ion electrolytes into tailored tri-layer microstructures to form electrode-supported dense thin-film solid-state electrolytes.
Later in the day, four featured presentations will take place. Dr. Brian Barnett, Vice President, CAMX Power will discuss examples of implementation of short detection for battery safety; Dr. Wolfgang Schade, Professor and Department Head, Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute & Department Head, Clausthal University of Technology, will present on polymer foil-embedded photonic sensors for battery safety; Dr. John Turner, Group Leader, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will explore balancing accuracy and computational cost in battery simulation; and Dr. Michael Toney, Division Head and Professor, Stanford University, will explain in-operando diagnostics of lithium-ion batteries.
Closing out the first day of the 7th Annual Battery Safety conference will be a dinner workshop facilitated by Dr. Steve Hwang, Chemist, U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration; George Kerchner, Executive Director, PRBA – The Rechargeable Battery Association; and Kevin Leary, Transportation Regulations Specialist, U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. This discussion will tackle important questions pertaining to lithium battery transportation regulations, and how to eliminate the complexity while improving safety based on sound science.
