Magee-Womens Research Institute (MWRI) is one of the largest research institutes in the United States. It is one of the first recognized National Centers of Excellence in Women’s Health by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This is the first research center devoted exclusively to health conditions affecting women and their infants. The medical research scientists who are engaged in health research that spans reproductive biology and development, pregnancy, female infectious diseases, fertility, cancer, pelvic health and well-being or women throughout the lifespan. It is a world-class center for both women’s health and comprehensive medical-surgical care and ranked among the top in the nation for gynecological care. Members of the medical staff hold academic appointments at the university and are actively involved in education and research, as well as patient care. Magee Research Institute has expanded its clinical care to men, as well as women, with a full-service Emergency Department and services including imaging, cardiology, orthopaedic surgery, lupus, gastro-enterology, colorectal surgery, pulmonology, and urology. Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC is guided by the principles established in the Woman care Model of Care, which focuses on the unique attributes of each woman and places her at the center of the health care delivery system. This is accomplished by focusing on the essential characteristics of the services provided like quality, access, respect, research, empowerment, integrated care.
