Martin Luther Christian University is the first full-fledged Christian University in Shillong, India, the capstone to more than two centuries of Christian education in this country. It was established in July 2005 to promote higher education for the general population. The university is named after Martin Luther (1483–1546), the first Christian leader and the father of reformation. Martin Luther Christian University was sponsored by the National Lutheran Health and Medical Board of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of India and the Khasi-Jaintia Presbyterian Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of India. Local sponsors Khasi-Jaintia Presbyterian Assembly of Presbyterian Church of India withdrew its sponsorship to the university college in 2014. Experiential Learning is one of the core pillars of the curriculum of all the courses in Martin Luther Christian University. It is prepared to meet the challenges and requirements of the present-day workplace. It emphasizes Skills and Experiential Learning and offers hands-on development projects for its students, to acquire not only knowledge and skills, but the real-life expertise needed to pursue gainful and fulfilling careers. The University offers under graduate, post graduate, Ph.D as well as Diploma courses. The University contribute to the sustainable development of the region, participating in vocational education, health care, information and communication networks, agrisciences, environmental protection, disaster education, peace studies and developmental projects.
