Max Delbruck Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association

1. About the University The Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association (MDC) is one of the most important centers for biomedical research. The MDC was founded in 1992, based on institutes of the former Academy of Sciences of the GDR, with a mission of translating discoveries from molecular research into applications to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of major human diseases. The site – rich in tradition – in Berlin-Buch, home to hospital clinics, research institutes and a flourishing biotech industry, is fertile ground for interdisciplinary and patient-oriented research. As a testament to its success, the MDC has been ranked 14th in the Thompson Reuters list of the world’s 20 best research institutes for molecular biology and genetics, based on our publication record. Currently about 1,600 staff members and guests work at the MDC. The annual institutional budget amounts to approximately 76 million Euros, 90 percent of which is received from the federal government and 10 percent from the State of Berlin. This is complemented by about 21 million Euros obtained by MDC researchers through grants and other external sources. The work of the MDC’s seventy research groups centers around three classes of disease which have an enormous impact on society 2. About Academics/campus/affiliated colleges Science and Society Science does not take place in a vacuum. Scientific findings have the potential to affect peoples’ lives or the lives of future generations. As a publicly funded research institution, we are committed to making the results of our research available to the widest possible audience. This is done through press releases as well as through events such as the Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften (Long Night of Sciences). At the same time, scientific research takes place in a social context. We are working mothers and fathers, we use energy to power our buildings and equipment, travel to the campus by bicycle, train or car, and must always consider the ethical implications of our work. 3. University Statistics The MDC is situated on Campus Berlin-Buch, and one of the largest research centers in Berlin. The following pages should give an overview of the eventful history, the art and architecture on the campus and all of its amenities and facilities: Food, Services, Sport & Leisure 4. Research from the University Research at the MDC aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of health and disease, and translate those findings into medical practice. These core activities are pursued in more than 60 independent research groups across four main research areas. On-going Research on: Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease, Cancer Research, Diseases of the Nervous System, Medical Systems Biology, Translational Research, Technology Development and Service
