National Institute Of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar) is one of the 31 NITs of India and was established in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College in Assam. In 2002, it was upgraded to the status of National Institute of Technology and was declared as Institute of National Importance under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007.
NIT Silchar offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Engineering, Science and Humanities with 11 departments. The annual intake for the B.Tech. program is more than 632 (632 as of 2015). The institute also offers different post graduation programs in Engineering, Science and Management. The Institute also has a Kendriya Vidyalaya school up to Class VIII functioning from a temporary building in Campus. Now, the Kendriya Vidyalaya has got its own campus inside the institute.
The Institute has its own kids school near to computer science building. NIT Silchar is ranked 65th best engineering college of India and 17th among 31 NITs in 2016 by National Institutional Ranking Framework, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. It is also ranked 4th best engineering college in the North Eastern region of India after IIT Guwahati, NIT Agartala and National Institute of Technology, Meghalaya by National Institutional Ranking Framework. Being an integral part of the dynamic research community, NIT Silchar focuses on designing engineering and management programs that instil leadership and teamwork, and carries a global appeal.
The undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. programs are regularly revised to comply with global technical developments and market demands. The Institute has bagged the 1st C-DAC Centre of Northeast India, established the first ever of its kind a High Performance Computing Centre in its sprawling campus and won the prestigious ASSHOCHSM awards for Best Engineering College in East India in February 2014.
