The National Institute of Design (NID) is internationally acclaimed as one of the foremost multi-disciplinary institutions in the field of design education and research. The Business Week, USA has listed NID as one of the top 25 European & Asian programmes in the world. The institute functions as an autonomous body under the department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. NID has been declared âÂÃâ¬ÂÃËInstitution of National ImportanceâÂÃâ¬ÂÃ⢠by the Act of Parliament, by virtue of the National Institute of Design Act 2014. NID is recognised by the Dept. of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR) under Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, as a scientific and industrial design research organisation. NID has been a pioneer in industrial design education after Bauhaus and Ulm in Germany and is known for its pursuit of design excellence to make Designed in India, Made for the World a reality. NIDs graduates have made a mark in key sectors of commerce, industry and social development by taking role of catalysts and through thought leadership. NID Gandhinagar is situated in the city of Gandhinagar, in Gujarat. As part of expansion plan, NID has built a new postgraduate campus at Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat State. Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath laid the foundation stone for this campus and it consists of a jewellery and automobile design centre along with lifestyle accessory design, new media design, toy and game design, strategic design management, transportation and information design centres. NIDs R&D Campus at Bengaluru was set up as a joint initiative of and funding from the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India and was inaugurated in March 2006. R&D Campus commenced with two research intensive PG Programmes namely Design for Retail Experience and Design for Digital Experience, from the academic year 2007-2008. Currently five Masters programmes are offered from this campus. NIDs Research & Development Campus addresses the immediate need for an exclusive Design Research centre in the country, by fostering the creative design spirit and sighting new opportunities and frontiers through NIDs design acumen nurtured over the four decades of intense teaching-learning process. All NID campuses are open to visitors throughout the year from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday (apart from public holidays). Visitors will have to obtain a Visitors Pass at the Main Gate to enter the campus. If you are visiting us in a group with prior appointment, NID can arrange Guided Tour of Campus. Courses offered A building within NID campus, Ahmedabad The institute offers three main courses, all of which follow the two semester per year pattern. Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD). This four-year course is offered in three specialsations by NID Vijayawada. Until 2014, NID Ahemdabad also used to confer this diploma. However, it has conferred a bachelors degree since 2014 when the National Institute of Design Act 2014 was passed, allowing the institute to do so. This course has a total of 60 seats. Even though it is a diploma level certification, it is at par and better than other major design institutes in India by virtue of it being run by the central government and its age.[5] Bachelor of Design (B.Des). This four-year course is offered in eight specialisations from the NID ahemdabad Campus. This course has a total of 100 seats.[6] Master of Design (M.Des). This two and a half year course is offered in 19 specialisations from all NID campuses ( Ahemdabad, Gandhinagar and Bangalore). This course has a total of 275 seats.
