National Institute of Homoeopathy was established as an Autonomous Organisation under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare on 10th December 1975 in Kolkata, Govt. of India. Presently, it is under the Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India. The Institute is affiliated to the West Bengal University of Health Sciences, at present institute conducts the courses in Homoeopathy i.e. Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery [B.H.M.S.] since 1987 and a Post - Graduate course i.e. Doctor of Medicine in Homoeopathy [M.D.(Hom.)] in six subjects with Organon of Medicine, Repertory, Materia Medica, Practice of Medicine, Paediatrics and Homoeopathic Pharmacy since 1998-99 onwards. The mission of NIH is to drive an excellence in Homoeopathic Medical Education and Research, to educate and train undergraduate, post graduate students and research scholars of homoeopathy along with highest professional standards and ethical values by the barriers of nationality, language, etc. It helps in meeting up healthcare needs of the community through dissemination of knowledge and service. Main vision is to be the India’s most energetic and responsive organisation by offering unparalleled educational opportunities in homoeopathy for learner community. There is an herb garden away from the institute which are envisaged for acclimatizing exotic species which are generally imported in order to save foreign exchange and to build up repository of authentic specimens of medicinal plants which can be further used by students and researchers. 90 different species of medicinal plants were maintained in the garden including 10 exotic species which are of high altitude and cold climate plants. These exotic species has been successfully acclimatized in the genetic plain of West Bengal. Further studies are in progress with these resulted ones. Besides maintaining the plantation of indigenous medicinal plants, Central Assistance Scheme 3 species have been introduced during the period under report i.e. Ocimum killimandscaricum, Sambacus javanica, Stereospermum, Sauveolens. Achillea Millefolium, Echinacea purpura and Conium Maculatum are notable among the exotic species which has been introduced during the period under report. The main objective of the institute is to conduct the research and to promote the growth and development of homeopathy, assist services, etc. Six subjects of homeopathy are with Organon of Medicine, Repertory, Materia Medica, Practice of Medicine, Paediatrics and Homoeopathic Pharmacy since 1998-99 onwards. Today it consists of an Undergraduate and Postgraduate sections with an auditorium of 800 seating capacity, a hospital having an outpatient dept. and a 100 bedded inpatients dept along with investigative facilities. Institute have a Staff Quarters on a plot of land measuring about 9 acres close to the Institute campus within Salt Lake. Institute is conducting clinical research activities on thyroid diseases, psoriasis and spondylitis. It also has a group for homeopathy research. Ethical Committee has been formed in the year 2013 years sanctioning clinical trials being conducted in research division. The prime point of division is to direct research on different partof Homoeopathy. At present prime focus is on Tonsillitis, degenerative bony diseases, Leucoderma, Thyroid dysfunctions (Hyperthyroid/Euthyroid) Spondylosis, Psoriasis, cancer.
