The National Institute of Marine Science and Technology (INSTM) is a public research institution working under the supervision of the Ministry of Scientific Research, Technology and Development of Competences. INSTM has approximately 72 permanent researchers, 65 non permanent ones and 30 technical managers.
It was created in 1924 to conduct research programs related to the sea and its resources, i.e. fishing, agriculture, marine environment, sea technologies, physical oceanography, sea-atmosphere interactions, etc. Research is organized in four laboratories: Marine environment, Aquaculture, Biodiversity-biotechnology and Living resources.
INSTM participates in many regional and international networks such as COI, IGoos-MedGoos, JCOMM. It has taken an active part in a number of international and European research projects related to physical oceanography and ocean-atmosphere interactions including SALTO, MATER, MAMA.
The laboratory of Marine Environment at INSTM conducts research programs on physical oceanography and marine dynamics. INSTM could contribute to MedCLIVAR through many aspects of the research conducted at the Laboratory of Marine Environment.
