National Institute of Medical Emergency

Portugal has, since 1981, an Integrated System for Medical Emergencies (SIEM). The SIEM is a set of entities that cooperate with one goal: to provide assistance to accident victims or sudden illness. These entities are PSP, GNR, INEM, the fire department, the Portuguese Red Cross and the Hospitals and Health Centers. The INEM is the Ministry of Health of the body responsible for coordinating the operation in mainland Portugal, SIEM . The system starts when someone calls 112, the European Emergency Number. The service call is up to the PSP and GNR, in emergency centers. Where the reason for the call has to do with health, it is forwarded to the Emergency Patients Guidance Centers (CODU) INEM. Whenever CODU triggers an emergency means demand that it be what is closer to the site, regardless of the entity to which it belongs (INEM, Fire or CVP).
