National Institute of Ocean Technology was established in 1993 as an independent society under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The major aim of establishing National Institute of Ocean Technology(NIOT) is to improve the growth of indigenous technology related to engineering problems which is associated with the harvesting of non-living and living resources in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone(EEZ). Dr. Madhavan Nair Rajeevan is the Chair, Earth System Science Organization (ESSO) and secretary to the government of India for Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). Dr. Satheesh C Shenoi is the director of National Institute of Ocean Technology and having an experience of 28 years in the field of Physical Oceanography.
National Institute of Ocean Technology is having various Technology groups such as Coastal and Environmental Engineering, Energy and fresh water, marine sensor water systems, marine biotechnology, ocean electronics, ocean structures, ocean Acoustics and modeling as well as technology projects such as deep sea technologies. The institute is equipped with facility such as Acoustic Test Facility and Hyperbaric Test Facility.
