The National Maternity Hospital was established in 1894. This is the largest maternity hospital in the State. This hospital mainly offers obstetrics, gynaecology and neonatal services. The hospital is renowned as a national referral center for complicated pregnancies, premature babies and sick infants. The gynaecology unit of this hospital annually treats over 9,000 patients. It also offers its services by training undergraduate and post graduate. Professor Fionnuala McAuliffe along with her research team was awarded first prize for their excellent research in 33rd annual meeting of Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine in San Francisco, California. This team has found by their research that intake of low glycaemic index diet will be helpful in positive gestational weight gain and maternal glucose intolerance which will be helpful in post-delivery weight retention and obesity. The National Maternity Hospital is in collaboration with Alcohol Action Ireland, Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital and the Rotunda Hospital in promoting pregnant women health aspects.
