Ningxia University was established in 1958, it is a result of a joint effort between the government of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and the Chinese Ministry of Education. This higher-education institution was one of the focal points of China's "211 Projects" initiative. The campus sits in Yinchuan, a city of long history, beautiful scenery, and historic culture. Ningxia University currently consists of 24 schools, encompassing 70 different undergraduate disciplines, spanning the 10 fields of philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, natural science, engineering, agriculture, and management.
Ningxia University has 5 first-level doctoral programs, 23 second-level doctoral programs, 26 first-level masters programs, 152 second-level masters programs, and accreditations for 5 specialized masters programs. Ningxia University currently consists of three campuses, it consists of more than 2,600 teachers and staff, over 50% of them are formal instructors.
Most of the instructors hold intermediate to senior titles, 52% of instructors with masters or doctors degrees. 15 teachers received special subsidies of the State Council, and 17 were elected into "National Hundreds, Thousands, Tens of Thousands Experts Project".
Ningxia University enrols more than 15,000 undergraduates and over 1,300 graduates and more than 600 are minority students. At the end of 1997, Ningxia Institute of Technology and Yinchuan Normal College (including Ningxia Education College) were merged into the University. And in February 2002, this college was merged with Ningxia Agricultural College, and formed the new Ningxia University.
