Nordregio is established by the Nordic Council of Ministers on 1997. It is a leading Nordic and European research centre for regional development and planning. Also, Nordregio is a part of the European research society; actively collaborating with a large number of European research institutions and private actors engaged in the production of new knowledge, and in the provision of policy advice. It conducts solution-oriented and applied research, addressing current issues from both research perspective and the viewpoint of practitioners and policymakers. Nordregio works on commissioned projects that help policymakers and practitioners to tackle social, economic, planning and governance challenges.
Nordregio’s research focuses on competence areas like Regional Rural and Demographic Development, Urban Planning and Sustainable Development, Regional Innovation and Green Growth, and Governance and Policy: Regional Reforms and Strategies. Other core competencies include mapping and GIS analysis, and communications and outreach. Nordregio consists of 40 staff members from around the world with project teams of junior and senior researchers along with specialists. It operates at local, regional, national and international levels thus Nordregio’s research covers a wide geographic scope, with an emphasis on the Nordic and Baltic Sea Regions, Europe and the Arctic.
Nordregio is often commissioned by the EU, Nordic Council of Ministers, regional and national authorities, ministries, public agencies and NGOs, as well as national and international research councils and programmes. Nordregio News is Nordregios quarterly print-based magazine, available as an e-newsletter for subscribers.
