Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg

The Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg was founded in 1993 and is one of the youngest universities in Germany. The university in Magdeburg has about 14,000 students in nine faculties. There are 11,700 papers published in international journals from this institute. It is named after the physicist Otto von Guericke, famous for his experiments with the Magdeburg hemispheres. The former Technical University Magdeburg, a teacher training college and a medical school were absorbed into the university when it was created. The university now composes nine faculties. Raila Odinga, a former Prime Minister of Kenya, is an alumnus of the Technical University. Professor Dr. Nguyen Thien Nhan, Vietnams current Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education & Training, is also an alumnus of the Technical University. Dr. Rumiana Jeleva, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria (2009–2010), earned a PhD degree in sociology at the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg. The Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg was founded in 1993 and is one of the youngest German universities. It was formed in a merger of the existing Technical University, the Teacher Training College and the Medical School. The University is named after Otto von Guericke (1602-1686), Magdeburgs famous son,whose pioneering research into the vacuum made him well-known beyond Germany. The University aspires to teach and research in the tradition of this great scientist, philosopher and engineer and to continue with his humanist work. It has 1.100 beds and is the largest hospital in the Magdeburg area. It handles as many as 45,000 in-patients annually as well as countless out-patients. Set up in 1993, the University of Magdeburg (OVGU) was founded in 1993 in Germany, and is focused on engineering, natural sciences and medicine.
