Royal Botanical Garden Juan Carlos

The Royal Botanic Garden Juan Carlos is an institution created in 1990, that at the moment has active 22 hectares of extension, culminating its expansion until the 26 hectares. The project takes shape thanks to the impetus of the University of Alcalá and the collaboration of the Community of Madrid. He is a member of the Ibero-Macaronesian Association of Botanical Gardens , and the BGCI , presenting works for the International Agenda for Conservation in the Botanical Gardens . The international identification code of the Royal Botanic Gardens Juan Carlos I as a member of the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI ), as well as the acronym of its herbarium is ALCA .
The Technical Office of the Botanical Garden was created in January 1990, as an integral part of the Technical Office of Architecture and Projects of the UAH , with a team led by Rosendo Elvira Palacio that has been enlarged or reduced according to needs. With the function of preparing the environmental documentation of the Partial Plan for Urbanization of the University Campus, approved in 1993, and of developing the projects of the University Botanical Garden, elaborating them, orienting them and participating in its execution. Since 1994 the Technical Office has become dependent on the General Foundation, which absorbed the staff of the Foundation.
Since its creation, this Office has also promoted, oriented and directed the activities of the different Houses of Trades and Schools Garden Workshop designed to collaborate in the project of the Botanical Garden, also promoting the development of collaboration agreements with INEM and Community of Madrid, for the eventual dedication of interns. In different periods, with the personnel of offices assigned, he has directly executed the conservation and development work of the gardening of the external campus and university buildings located in the city, or supervised and / or directed the same when they have been carried out By external contractors, by school staff and even staff of administration and services of the University of Alcalá.
In addition to the exhibition grounds, the Botanical Garden has complementary elements that enhance its development and dissemination and research function: Services building (offices, auditorium, exhibition hall), Covered auditorium (with capacity for 250 people) with lighting, Educational area with two indoor classrooms and three open air, Seed Bank, included in the Network of Germplasm Banks of the Ibero-Macaronesian Association of Botanical Gardens, where the seeds of the plants of the Garden are conserved in conditions that guarantee their viability for future plantings or replenishments and for scientific exchange and research, Parking with capacity for 6 buses and 140 vehicles, Nursery of production and acclimatization, of 1 Ha.
