The Somali National University was established in 1954 as "L'Universita' Nazionale Somala", under Italian U.N. Trusteeship over Italy's former Italian colony in East Africa of Italian Somaliland. Its main mission is to establish acquire and improve the quality of the national education that promotes knowledge, research and technology transfer so as to produce the necessary trained work force for the country. It has 13 departments, 700 staff and over 15,000 students. It admits close to 1000 new students every year. It is mainly having 7 faculties: 1) Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental science.2) Faculty of Economics and Management science.3) Faculty of Education and social science.4) Faculty of Law.5) Faculty of Medical and Health science.6) Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry.7) Faculty of Engineering.
