Southwest National Primate Research Centre is affiliated with Texas Biomedical Research Institute. In 1999 it is the first NCRR funded research centre in over 35 years. SNPRC brings unique strengths to NPRC. It mainly takes care of the following primates i.e., Baboons, Chimpanzees, Macaques, Marmosets & Tamarins etc. Their mission is to “Improve health of the global community through innovative biomedical research with non-human primates”.
SNPRC provides best services for the research in primates to the south western region of the country. SNPRC is one among the 8 primate research centres that is getting sponsored by National Centre for Research Resources, of NIH. It is conducting researches on infectious diseases such as AIDS, hepatitis, microbial diseases, vaccine development and immunology. It is an international resource that provides specialized facilities and expertise in research with nonhuman primates to investigators from around the US and other countries. It maintains 4,000 nonhuman primates.
