The university was first a school founded in the year 1936 by Dr. Lee Sook-chong which was later developed into Sungshin Women’s University. When the institution was founded, Korea was under the Japanese rule and it was tried very hard to destroy the local culture and patriotism. Hence, Dr. Lee decided to establish an educational academy based on the fact that only education can help Koreans to overcome the Japanese and gain independence. Wharever capital she had was invested in making of the now University which was then a mere school with 60 students in Kyungwoon-dong, Seoul. The numbers of students increased with time and the school had to move to Donam-dong, Sungbuk-gu. The girls school was then reorganized to make it School of Home Management in November 1945, just after the country gained its independence from the Japanese rule. It was then that the school was renamed to Sungshin Girl’s Middle School. In the year 1936, with four departments Sungshin Womens Junior college was founded with Home Management department, Business Administration, Crafts department and Textiles department. In the years 1965, 1967 and 1969, Sungshin Elementary school, Girls Middle school and Girls high school were established. The school was changed from that of the teachers college to Liberal Arts and Sciences College. Ever since the school has gained the status of university from that of a school, pursued college education and was regarded as the most progressive colleges established at that time frame. A graduate school of Industrial studies was also established in the year of 1979. By providing improved, latest educational facilities and environment for its students, the University wants to drive the Nation to an ulterior level. The graduate school of education was founded in the year of 1983. The university always promoted quality education and has stood among the top universities in providing righteous education to the future citizens of the Nation. The educational motto of the University is to embrace sincerity and faith. To strive for new knowledge and to act independently is the main agenda. The University continuously puts efforts in moulding the students in a best way for a sound judgement capability by imbibing sincerity in their persona with their experienced teachings here. A feeling of awareness about oneself is created along with great mannerisms that make a student a great future citizen serving the Nation. Professional knowledge and abilities, hard working nature, problem solving skills, accountability and cooperativeness, innovative mentality, competence in the management of change are the key principles the management here strives to create in each and every student they teach here.
