Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics was established with sole aim of federating bioinformatics activities throughout the Switzerland. It was established in the year 1988 in the month of March. The institute offers a wide range of resources for the life science research community, most being accessible through ExPASy, the SIB bioinformatics resource portal. Since 1988, Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics has grown rapidly as a giant in the field of bioinformatics and widely recognized as one of the leading data science organizations in the world. Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics provides life scientists, clinicians, and PhD students with a large portfolio of long and short blocks of courses and workshops. Being an interdisciplinary field Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics groups are involved in several fields of activity ranging from genetic diseases, to the evolution of species, to bioinformatics infrastructure. Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics has nearly 12 core facilities and high-performance computing (HPC) centres providing expert data analysis services and computing power to life scientists in academia and industry. Coming to research activities, in today’s date Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics is housing some 65 bioinformatics research groups and 800 scientists from the major Swiss schools of higher education and research institutes. Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics provides an excellent training and scholarships to the ambitious students and pursuers.
