Symbiosis International University

Symbiosis International University (SIU) is a private coeducational, multi-institutional university located in Pune, Maharashtra, India. It has been given official recognition by the UGC and the AICTE. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council have conferred an A grade to the university. SIU is part of the Symbiosis Society, which is its managing body. The society was established in 1971 by Padmashree S. B. Mujumdar. Symbiosis International University has 28 academic institutions spread over ten locations in Pune, Noida, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Nashik. All form part of the Symbiosis Society, with the other institutes in the society being affiliated with other bodies. The first institutions belonging to the Symbiosis Society were established in 1971 and were affiliated to the University of Pune. Established in 1971 under the patronage of S. B. Mujumdar, president and founding director, the Symbiosis Society is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and the Bombay Public Trust, Act, 1950. The principal director is Dr. Vidya Yeravdekar. In 2002, as part of a larger program to grant autonomy to institutions of academic excellence, the Ministry of Human Resources Development conferred the "Deemed to be University" status on three institutes under the Symbiosis umbrella: the Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies and Research, Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM) and Symbiosis Societys Law College. In 2006 the University Grants Commission withdrew the word "Deemed" and renamed the institution as "Symbiosis International University". In 2008, the University established its first campus outside Maharashtra when it opened Symbiosis Institute of Business Management in Bengaluru. Symbiosis Centre for Research and Innovation (SCRI) was established in 2009 with an objective of achieving high standards of research at SIU that result into quality contribution to the knowledgebase of the disciplines of Law, Management, Computer Studies, Health and Biomedical Sciences, Media, Communication and Design, Humanities and Social Sciences and Engineering. SCRI acknowledges that the role of a University is to stay connected with the community by the way of understanding its major issues and problems and to suggest means to resolve them. Universities are expected to make meaningful contributions to the dialogue around the development of policies that impact the society. SCRI is a facilitator to the research journey of the academic fraternity of SIU. The department provides academic and administrative support to the research endeavours of the members of the Faculties and students of SIU. SCRI offers SIU’s Ph.D. Programme, Doctoral Fellowships, Research Funding and support for collaboration and publication to the researchers at SIU. The department is a nodal unit for enabling the research activities of SIU fraternity. Continuous improvement in quality of research at SIU is facilitated by the University’s research collaboration with the organizations such as Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), Larsen and Toubro Ltd., Society for Development Studies, Lupin Research Park, Chest Research Foundation, Serum Institute of India Ltd. and many more. The research capabilities of SIU have been recognised by the industry and Government at several occasions through research funding and empanelment as a vendor for conducting evaluation studies. SCRI is committed to enhance the research horizon for SIU with appropriate strengthening of the depth and quality of research contribution.
