The Tamil University was set up at Thanjavur, by the Government of Tamil Nadu on fifteenth September 1981 under the arrangement of the Tamil University Act No.9 of 1982, for encouraging the progression of learning and research in Tamil dialect, writing and culture. The University Grants Commission, New Delhi perceived the University on eleventh June 1985. Creating a different University for Tamil dialect was mooted as ahead of schedule as 1925 by the educated researchers of Tamil society. This thought took a solid shape just in 1981 under the authority of the Honb1e Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Dr. M.G. Ramachandran.
