The University was established in 1987 when the lawmaking body set up the College of Education for Women, which is the foundation of Tikrit University. Tikrit University is viewed as the principal college in the northwest piece of Iraq with over 12,000 students. In 1988, the College of Medicine (the first of 19 schools at Tikrit University) was opened. It is the primary school in Iraq to receive Problem Based Learning (people group based learning) with a little gathering.
The college of Medicine consists of 4 Clinical and 7 basic science branches. The school offers graduate degree in Medicine and General Surgery. Since 1995 the school has graduated more than 870 doctors. Since its foundation in 1989 until this day, the university has accomplished wide accomplishments at all levels. It began with one school, College of Education for Women. Today it incorporates 22 logical and helpful Colleges and two logical habitats for explore (Salahaldin's Center, and the Center of Natural Resources) and two administrations’ focuses (Computer Center and Informatics, the Center of Development and Continual Education).
