Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth was established in 1921, as an educational memorial of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the Father of Indian Unrest and an advocate of National Education. The establishment of the Vidyapeeth was aimed towards imparting National. The Vidyapeeth had formulated a long-term national education programme and implemented it successfully in those days in all its affiliated colleges/institutions. It co-ordinated the efforts being made by similar institutions and provided much-needed educational facilities in the faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering and Ayurveda at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. Emphasis was laid on the study of Sanskrit - the language of the national culture. The Vidyapeeths policy to provide instruction through Marathi marked a beginning of a revolutionary change in the education system. After Independence, the Vidyapeeth entered into the discipline of Social Sciences and provided the facilities for Post Graduate Education and Research in it.
The addition of courses in new disciplines has been possible under the able guidance of Dr. Deepak Tilak, the Vice - Chancellor of the Vidyapeeth. His leadership has resulted in the Vidyapeeth transforming itself to face the challenges in today’s globalized world. The Vidyapeeth at present offers post-graduate education through MCA, MBA, MSW, L.L.B., M.J, B.Lib, M.Lib, MA (Social Sciences), MA (Marathi, Hindi, English, Japanese, Sanskrit, Indology), MA in Classical Music / Classical Dance, Ayurved and M.Com along with under graduate education through BCA, BBA, BFA, JOURNALISM, BHMCT (Hotel Management), BPT, B.Sc Nursing, B.Com and B.A.
