Turku Centre for Computer Science

Turku Centre for Computer Science (TUCS) is a joint research institute of University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University. TUCS conducts basic and applied research in computer science and engineering in four research programmes: BioHealth – From Computational Biology and Medical Informatics to Health and Wellbeing Com3 – Combinatorics, Complex Systems and Computability RITES – Resilient IT Infrastructures TISRA – Turku Information Systems Research Alliance TUCS boasts a long history of high-level achievements of its affiliated researchers, in terms of articles in high-level journals and conferences, high number of citations, invitations to speak in the most important conferences in the field, and memberships in editorial boards of many high-level international journals. TUCS has been a Center of Excellence of Research of the Academy of Finland in the very first round of such centers in Finland, 1995-1999. A unit of TUCS, the Centre for Reliable Software Technology (CREST), has also been a Center of Excellence during 2002-2007. Two Academy Professors, as well as three FIDIPRO professors have been / are affiliated with TUCS. TUCS is hosting the research activity of Academician Arto Salomaa.   The education and research activities at TUCS are carried out within the Master’s Programmes, the Graduate Programme, and in the Research Units. Planning and decision making takes place in various workgroups and committees. Decisions are primarily made in the board and by the director. The Graduate Programme committee is responsible for the handling of most of the questions regarding the Graduate Programme. TUCS has 7 core areas of expertise. Algorithmics Bioinformatics Embedded systems Formal methods Fundamentals of computing and discrete mathematics Information systems Software engineering TUCS boasts a long history of high-level achievements of its affiliated researchers in these areas. In recognition of its early history, TUCS was awarded the status of a Center of Excellence of Research of the Academy of Finland in the very first round of such centers in Finland, 1995-1999. The formal methods research at TUCS, in the form of the Centre for Reliable Software Technology (CREST), was awarded the status of a Center of Excellence during 2002-2007 for its ground breaking research. The quality of research at TUCS has also been recognized through the fact that two Academy Professors (Arto Salomaa and Ralph-Johan Back), as well as three FIDIPRO professors (Robert Fullér, Luca Q. Zamboni and Harry Bouwman) have been / are affiliated with TUCS. TUCS is also hosting the research activity of Academician Arto Salomaa.
