About the University: Umeå Plant Science Centre was established in the year 1999 with an aim to create a strong common research environment Ove Nilsson is the director of the institute, UPSC is an organisation administered by a board that is appointed by the two universities. The board is responsible for the strategic development of UPSC, for common infrastructure and technical platforms, and for undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral training. It functions in collaboration with Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. It focuses on experimental plant biology, plant physiology, plant molecular biology. The institute conducts introductory and advanced training in plant physiology, ecophysiology, plant molecular biology, forest genetics and forest biotechnology within the Forestry program and at the master level. The main activities are academic research in experimental plant biology where the major aim is to understand all aspects of plants in relation to the environment in which they live. It also deals with plant physiology/molecular plant biology both at the Bachelor and Masters levels. About Academics/Campuses/Affiliated Colleges: The institute deals on research issues, technology platforms, and training of masters and doctoral level students. The international element within UPSC is large, with over 40 nationalities represented. The department conducts introductory and advanced training in plant physiology, ecophysiology, plant molecular biology, forest genetics and forest biotechnology within the Forestry program and at the master level. The department offers postgraduate studies in biology, specializing in plant physiology, ecophysiology, plant molecular biology and forest genetics. Postgraduate courses are generally held in cooperation with the Department of Plant Physiology. In 1999 the Department of Plant Physiology, formed a centre of experimental plant biology, Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC), together with the Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. University Statistics: UPSC since 2005 has been termed as a center of excellence and as one of Europes most prominent research in plant research. Umeå has been highly-ranked universities teaching more than 35000 students. The research environments are international. Researchers at Umeå University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences are internationally known for their open interdisciplinary research collaborations. In 2014, Umeå University was ranked best university in Nothern Europe among the top 50 universities established within the last 50 years. The Umeå Plant Science Centre has about 100 persons in total at the department which amounts to typically around 20-25 PhD students, 30 post-doctoral fellows, 15 technical administrational staff and more than 20 group leaders. The annual budget is in excess of 100 million and about 75% of the expenses are applied for in competition with other research centers. The Wallenberg and Kempe foundations make significant contributions along with Swedish research councils to the institute. University Research: UPSC is one of the strongest research environments for experimental plant biology in Europe and conducts research of both basic and strategic importance. Research at UPSC covers a wide range of disciplines in plant biology including ecology, genetics, physiology, biochemistry, cell biology and molecular biology. The common goal shared by scientist within UPSC is to understand the mechanisms driving plant development and plant adaptation to environmental changes. The work is carried out at all organization levels of the plant, and through integrating the different research fields and areas of expertise. The institute aims to describe the plant as a complex organism in dynamic interaction with its environment. Several research teams of the UPSC are involved in strong research collaborations at the Chemical Biological Centre KBC, which are dedicated to solar fuels and artificial photosynthesis. UPSC is part of Green Future, one priority area of research collaboration which also consists of the research programme Future Forests; the government’s designated strategic research area Bio4Energy, marine research ECOCHANGE, and future biorefineries.
