The University of Montreal was first founded when the Université Laval in Quebec City founded a new branch in Montréal in 1878, which became known as the Université de Laval à Montréal. The University of Montreal is a publicly funded research university, and a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. The University of Montreal has consistently been ranked one of Canadas top universities. The 2013-2014 Times Higher Education World University Rankings placed the university 106th in the world, and fifth in Canada.The university has an extensive alumni network, with more than 300,000 members registered with the universitys alumni network.Throughout the universitys history, faculty, alumni, and former students have played prominent roles in a number of fields. Several prominent business leaders have also graduated from the university.
