The Pedagogical University (UP) was founded in 1985 as a Higher Pedagogical Institute (ISP), by ministerial decree 73/85 of 4 December, as an institution dedicated to the training of teachers for all levels of the National Education System ( SNE) and of education.
The creation of the ISP in 1985 resulted from a strategic vision based on the need to better coordinate the training of staff in the education sector.
At the time of its creation, the institution began to operate in facilities of the then General Preparatory School Joaquim José Machado. These facilities, with about fifteen rooms and a few work rooms, were designed for a secondary school at the time and not for a university. But the rapid growth of the UP dictated the search for new spaces.
