The University Psychiatric Clinic (UPK) Basel is an independent institution of public law, which operates several psychiatric clinics in cooperation with the University of Basel. According to a decision of the Grand Council of the canton of Basel-Stadt from 1882 the "Irrenanstalt Friedmatt" was opened in 1886 on a spacious site outside the city with 214 beds. In 1899 a change of name took place in "Friedmatt Cantonal Hospital and Care Center". In 1954 the walls were demolished. In the 1960s the name was changed to "Psychiatric University Clinic" (PUK). In 2005, the name changed to the current name, in 2010 the polyclinic was integrated. In 2012 the conversion into the current legal form took place. In UPK Basel 1321 employees from 39 nations work. At Wilhelm Klein-Strasse 27 is the central recording (psychiatric emergency room) of UPK Basel, which is occupied around the clock. In the health center psychiatry at Kornhausgasse 7, clarification and initial treatment without appointment are possible during the day from Monday to Friday. Together with Bardusch AG, Bürgerspital and Rehab Basel, UPK Basel maintains the largest certified urban natural park in Switzerland.
