University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad

The University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad was established in the year 1986. University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad (UASD) is established by the Government of Karnataka and is a state agriculture university. It aims to impart education, research and extension activities in the fields of agriculture, forestry, and food science, agri-marketing and home science. . The University has its jurisdiction over 7 nearby districts namely Bagalkot, Belgaum, Bijapur, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, and Uttar Kannada in northern Karnataka region. In that area there is a greater diversity in soil types, climate, topography cropping and farming situations. The University jurisdiction includes dry-farming to heavy rainfall and irrigated area. Important crops in the nearby region include sorghum, cotton, rice, pulses, chilli, sugarcane, groundnut, sunflower, wheat, safflower etc. The region is also known for many other horticultural crops. With the establishment of this university a considerable progress has been registered in the field of education, research has been noted. The University of Agricultural Sciences has 5 Colleges, 30 Research Stations, 6 Extension Education Units, 5 Krishi Vigyan Kendras and ATIC. The colleges which come under the university are College of Agriculture Dharwad, College of Agriculture Vijayapur, College of Agriculture Hanumanmatti, College of Rural Home Science Dharwad, College of Forestry Sirsi, College of Food Technology Dharwad. The university offers graduate courses in Agriculture, Forestry, Home Science, Agri Business Management, Agriculture Co-operation and marketing and Food technology. The university also offers post graduate courses in Agronomy, Biochemistry, Horticulture. Biotechnology, Plant Pathology, Human Development, Forest Biology, Silviculture, Agroforestry, Forest Protection, Forest Engineering, Forest Management, Textiles and apparel designing etc. The University also offers Ph.D. in 11 subjects. The University provides 30 Agricultural Research Stations spread across diverse agro-ecosystems, 25 All India Coordinated Research Projects (AICRPs) and 267 externally funded adhoc projects and other staff research projects. The major research projects on which the university is working are Rastriya Krishi Vikas Yojana under the Prime Ministers special package on agriculture, World Bank aided National Agricultural Innovation Project, CIDA-McGill-UASD collaborative project on consolidation of food security in South India, World Bank aided GoK project entitled Community Based Tank Management Consultancy Project, DBT programme support for agricultural biotechnology, in collaboration with Indonesian Government with regard to wheat, National Horticulture Mission and Technology Mission on Cotton (Gol), Centrally funded Farmers Participatory Action Research Programme (PFARP), empowerment of rural families through value addition of regional staple food grains funded by IDRC, Canada and a project on empowerment of SC/ST farmers through IFS funded by GoK, precision farming, production of bio-diesel yielding plants, rain water harvesting and ground water recharge at Dharwad and Vijayapur campuses funded by CGB, New Delhi.
