BGS has a considerable amount of data held in its archives and data collections. Much of this information has been indexed and database allowing you to search, view and download our data collections online. BGSs most popular databases and vocabularies including data relating to borehole materials, rock and fossil collections, as well as the BGS Rock Classification Scheme and Lexicon are available to access below. As part of its on-going research, BGS have developed a number of software tools to advance their understanding of scientific systems and help them model geological and hydrogeological processes. This software has been made available for anyone to use. Access our data via open, standards-based services. Highlights include access to over 70 onshore and offshore layers such as boreholes, earthquakes, landslides, fossils, hydrogeology, rock samples, geochemistry and geophysics. These services can be used in mash up type applications within GIS and web browsers. Many of these services contribute to BGS complying with the EU INSPIRE directive. BGS are actively involved in collaborations to promote data sharing. BGS is a leading provider of applied geoscience services and has an extensive international programme of research, survey and monitoring, data management and dissemination, including major institutional strengthening programmes in the developing world. BGS operate and maintain a wide range of state-of-the-art laboratories and other facilities. These facilities, managed under the Laboratory Facilities Programme, underpin virtually all of BGSs diverse range of core and commissioned research programmes.
