The foundation of an undeniable University in Jaffna had been a long standing goal of the general population of Jaffna. This was satisfied when a grounds of the University of Sri Lanka was built up in 1974 by a request made by the Honorable Minister of Education. The grounds turned into a free and self-ruling University bearing the name University of Jaffna on January 01, 1979.The University offers various graduate degree, postgraduate degree and diploma programs including agriculture, arts engineering and management programs. Professor Sivasubramaniam Pathmanathan is a Sri Lankan Tamil historian, academic, author and current chancellor of the University of Jaffna followed by the Prof.Ratnam Vigneswaran the voice chancellor of the University, The University also holds several journals, the university has developed massively and is today the home of eight resources with fifty seven scholarly offices, a few administration/scholastic/bolster units and focuses and a Campus at Vavuniya, around 130 Km from Jaffna. Also a couple of more Faculties, Departments and Centers are booked for advancement and will, in time, additionally open the University's way to people in general and increment its part, obligations and duties regarding the locale around it.
